A bit of followup: I did actually learn today that there was a recent change to the itch.io CDN that would have made the game unplayable for some time, and while I'm not sure whether the timeline works out such that it could have explained your problem, it's possible that the fix I just uploaded fixed your problem as well.
Hey there. Very nice puzzle indeed. It was a bit rough to get into but after a few minutes I was fully invested. I love a good challenge in a simple yet layered puzzle. Well done! :)
