Symmetric Pursuit
OVERVIEW
Symmetric Pursuit is a strategic puzzle based on a simple ruleset which yields a surprisingly elegant and non-obvious winning strategy (in my opinion, at least). The puzzle of the game is to work out the winning strategy in full generality. Can you lead the humans to victory in their war against the skeletons?
RULES AND TIPS
These rules are also explained in an in-game tutorial.
- You control the humans. The computer controls the skeletons.
- Each turn consists of selecting one piece and moving it to an adjacent hex.
- On desktop, select by left-clicking, and right-click the adjacent square to move it.
- On mobile, tap to select a piece, then tap the desired destination. Tapping a selected piece again will deselect it.
- If you move a piece into a hex containing enemy pieces, it will mutually annihilate with one enemy piece on that hex.
- Win by making the last move (i.e., by using your last piece to destroy your enemy's last piece).
- Each position (including randomly generated positions in infinite mode) is guaranteed to have a winning strategy for the human player.
- The ⏪ and ⏩ buttons allow you to undo and redo moves, respectively.
- On the "infinity" level, you may generate a new position by clicking the button with the dice icon. The plus and minus buttons next to the dice icon let you adjust the number of starting pieces (which currently may be between 1 and 4, with each side getting the same number of starting pieces).
iOS NOTE
The web version of this game might be able to run on iOS devices, but anecdotally, it appears to be highly unstable on such devices. Caveat ludor.
